Inria team MIMESIS associated to the iCube laboratory at the University of Strasbourg invites applications for the full-time position of a research engineer. The successful candidate will work in a close collaboration with other team members focusing on the exciting topic combining the state-of-the-art biomechanical modeling techniques with the stochastic estimation of parameters. The project will be conducted in the context of computer-aided surgical navigation employing physics-based models to facilitate the guidance directly during the operation. For example, the augmented-reality techniques employing a patient-specific biomechanical model reconstructed from preoperative data are currently experimented to navigate the surgeon in order to accelerate and improve the localization of the target region containing the tumor.
We are seeking candidates with excellent programming skills, capable of integrating new functionalities in a large simulation framework implemented in C++ and Python. Beside the development of novel methods of stochastic simulations, the successful candidate will be also directly involved in the acquisition and processing of medical data in collaboration with our clinical partners. Therefore, a previous experience with medical image processing (such as segmentation, registration and tracking) is an asset. The 1-year position is aimed to start early 2018, within the MIMESIS team, in the context of project IdEx (Initiative d’Excellence).

The MIMESIS team, located on the hospital campus in the heart of Strasbourg, is dedicated to numerical simulation in medicine. Over the past 4 years, the MIMESIS team has developed new approaches supporting advanced simulations in the context of simulation for training. The best example of our success in this area is certainly the work done in collaboration with the HelpMeSee foundation, leading to the creation of the start-up InSimo. The team focuses on the use of real-time simulation for per-operative guidance. The underlying objectives include patient-specific biophysical modeling, dedicated numerical techniques for real-time computation, dynamic topological representations, data assimilation and image-driven simulation. The MIMESIS team works in close relationship with IHU Strasbourg, a new institute developing clinical technologies at the intersection of the fields of laparoscopy, interventional flexible endoscopy and interventional radiology.
